Favorite Foods Could be Making BPH Worse

What Is BPH?

Typically, BPH is found in men 50 and over. However, many men may begin to show symptoms of BPH in their forties and go undiagnosed until much later. It is unclear why BPH happens in some men and not others. A common theory is that it is simply a part of the aging process in men.

How Can Everyday Foods Affect Prostate Health?

No one is really sure why the prostate becomes inflamed in so many men as they become older… and the answers as to why certain foods aggravate the disease is also puzzling.

Here are some foods and drinks that aggravate the symptoms of BPH and should be limited or avoided.

Several studies have implicated saturated and trans fats, red meat and animal product intake in BPH, particularly beef and dairy products.

Red Meat

The medical community recommends that anyone with BPH symptoms avoid saturated fats and trans-fats. Although, they cannot say why it happens, it’s clear that the consumption of red meat can be adverse to your prostate health. The better choice would be to substitute mono-saturated fats, more lean meats and fish in your diet. Limit or stop eating red meat all together. It should be noted that there is also a correlation between red meat and prostate cancer.

Dairy

Dairy is typically high in saturated fats and is adverse to maintaining prostate health. Dairy is a major source of calcium but there are other healthier food choices available to get the recommended daily amount of calcium including: Salmon, Sardines, Collard greens, Spinach, Turnip greens, White beans, Okra, Baked beans, Broccoli, Peas, Brussel sprouts, Sesame seeds, Bok Choy, Almonds, Tofu and Rrhubarb.

Alcohol

Too much consumption of alcohol can in some men increase a hormone called prolactin. When the levels of prolactin are high, they cause the prostate to become enlarged. Alcohol also tightens the bladder neck to hamper urination. And alcohol is a diuretic; it increases the amount of urine that builds up inside the bladder. The more you drink, the more problems you’ll likely have.

Caffeine and other stimulants

Limiting intake of all sources of caffeine including coffee, tea and energy drinks is strongly suggested. Some of the prostate is made up of smooth muscle, and anything that causes that muscle to constrict, as does caffeine, will make urination more difficult. Also, caffeine increases the need to urinate and can irritate the bladder. Prostate inflammation can also be brought on by other stimulants. Anti-histamines, like coffee, can cause your prostate to enlarge. Both caffeine and antihistamines affect the soft tissue of the body, like your prostate gland. It is suggested to avoid caffeine and anti-histamines as much as possible, and especially avoid consumption right before bedtime.

Spicy Foods

Be wary of spicy foods. Spicy and acidic foods bother some men with enlarged prostates. If you notice more problems after eating chili, hot pepper sauce or other spicy or acidic foods, then you’re among those men and you should avoid that cuisine.

Other Food Components

Among the food components that have been suggested to aggravate BPH, but has less clear medical research for support, is MSG.

MSG or monosodium glutamate is a food enhancer that is a manufactured sodium salt of glutamic acid. It is found in many of processed foods. Increased symptoms of BPH have been reported with consumption of MSG. Unfortunately, MSG is found in many different ingredients. It can be difficult to know whether or not a food has MSG. If the following ingredients are included on the label, that food could very well contains MSG:

Textured Protein

Autolyzed Yeast

Gelatin Glutamate

Glutamic Acid

Hydrolyzed Protein

Calcium or Sodium Caseinate

Yeast Extract

Diet obviously plays a major role in maintaining good prostate health. There may be certain foods that aggravate your BPH. So it’s important to pay close attention to how your prostate responds after you’ve eaten certain foods or drink. Based on what is currently known in the medical community, avoiding known triggers and choosing to eat a more balanced healthier diet could be the key to maintaining better prostate health.
